Left 4 Dead is a great co-op game.
There are 4 main campaigns. Depending on which difficulty you choose and your play style, each one can take anywhere between 40 min - 2 hours. That's just a rough estimate based on my experience with the game. Campaign mode revolves around travelling through a map's checkpoints with your team without everyone getting down. There will be a new campaign available this winter as free DLC on PC. If you're getting the 360 version I think you'll have to pay a small price.
A slightly more competitive mode would be Versus. This is different from regular campaign in that you are competing against another team of 4 players. In one turn you get to play as the survivors whilst the opposing team control the special infected (hunters, smokers etc...). Playing as the survivors in versus is pretty much the same as campaign except harder as the special infected can actually plot something intelligent. Then in the other turn you get to play as the infected which is great fun (though annoying when your team doesn't co-ordinate attacks).
Finally there's survival mode. It's a pretty basic idea - see how long you can survive the zombie swarms without dying! These are on small maps areas (a lot of which are just taken from the campaigns). I haven't played this a great deal but I noticed it's pretty intense. More special infected then usual can be on the map at the same time which can cause really crazy situations.
If you have a friend who has it I'd definitely recommend getting it. It's most fun playing with people you know (though I know it's pretty easy to make friends online).
However, you may want to wait up on Left 4 Dead 2. It looks like it will improve a few of the originals weak points such as available weapons and zombie variety.
Overall 7.5/10
